Once we had wrapped up the native flute recording (which became "No More Words") on day one, we spent the second day creating another song with the same soundtrack, using Irish flutes. I knew this version would have a brighter feel - like a Celtic ballad, with a clearer theme and a repeated verse. During the mixing we shortened the piano track a little, removed the "hawk screeches" from the birdsong sectionsand add some drum effects. At one point I told Todd I needed the cymbals to have "less clang and more sizzle" which he totally understood! We created the harmonies "live" by overdubbing with the best "takes" of the melody, with me switching off between Irish flute and my hybrid "low whistle" flute. The high whistle floats in from a distance, like a voice from the hillside - another tribute to Todd's mixing skills, because that little whistle is a total screamer! I inherited my Mom's love for windchimes, so as a finishing touch we added windchimes at the beginning, to set the mood. She had several Woodstock Chimes hanging on her porch, and the sound was a constant backdrop to my visits.

About the song: This is the second of two singles dedicated to my Mom, who passed away in 2021 during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. I had the chance to visit her in the fall of 2020, flying during that strange period when the airports and planes were nearly empty. Her health and mental state were failing rapidly, and I knew it would be the last time I would see her alive. Our visit was strained, as she resisted all advice or help of any kind. She enjoyed listening to me play flute, and Irish music in particular. Her two favorite tunes were “Danny Boy” and “Ashokan Farewell” which always reminded her of the years she live in a small house in upstate New York, near the Ashokan reservoir (one of her favorite places to go for a walk). During our conversation, I discovered that one of her lifetime regrets was that she had never visited Ireland, and how she imagined me “playing Danny Boy on the moors” for her.
At that moment, I understood her request, and starting researching how to take….. Ashes to Ireland
